can you sum up the ways they did get affected? this is a first for me to hear that in Leninakan there was a family that was not majorly affected by the earthquake...

Well, their house was not seriously damaged and they were not made homeless by the earthquake. That's what I meant. Other than that, I personally do not know what kind of an impact the earthquake because I don't know anyone else from Leninakan. All of my family in Armenia lives in Yerevan.

ARMENIA THANKS FRANCE FOR 1988 EARTHQUAKE RELIEF EFFORTS

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met Monday with members of the National Assembly of France, Chairman of the France-Armenia Friendship Group Francois Rochebloine and Vice-Chairman Rene Rouquet, who have arrived in Armenia to attend commemoration events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the 1988 earthquake, the RA leader’s press office told PanARMENIAN.Net. Thanking France for the earthquake relief efforts, President Sargsyan hailed the activities of the French parliamentarians and informed that he has signed a decree to award Francois Rochebloine and Rene Rouquet with the Order of Honor for the aid they rendered to Armenia after the devastating earthquake of 1988 and for their continued efforts for strengthening friendly relations between the peoples of Armenia and France. Receiving the award Mr. Rochebloine said it encourages him for greater efforts while Mr. Rouquet described the award as acknowledgment of his twenty-year long activities. The parties also referred to the prospects of bilateral economic and political relations and cooperation within international organizations.

Գյումրի: 20 տարի անց: Ֆանտան թաղամաս: Լենա Աթոյանը և նրա դուստրը` Սուսաննան, արդեն 20 տարի ապրում են նույն տնակում`սպասելով իրենց նոր բնակարանին: Լենան մի քանի ամիս անկողնում է անցկացրել ոտքերի հետ կապված հիվանդության պատճառով: Լենան և Սուսաննան ապրում են ամսական 90 ամերիկյան դոլարի չափ թոշակով

It's been twenty years since the earthquake and parts of Leninakan are still in rubble; tens of thousands of victims are still homeless. Such facts are attributable to criminal negligence on the part of the bourgeois gangsters in the current "government".

As for my experiences until 10 years old: I wouldn't trade them in the world. It's made me the grateful person that I am for every single day that I live. I don't take anything for granted, most of all the warm food and hot showers that I have the privilege to enjoy.

Considering that it took the comunist government less than 5 years to rebuild the entire union after the war, it should have taken no more than 2 years (WHICH THEY HAD) to rebuild GYUMRI.

21 YEARS LATER

Twenty-one years ago, on December 7, a devastating earthquake ripped through Armenia leveling to the ground 40 per cent of the country's territory in a matter of seconds. It struck at 11:41 local time when children were at school and most people at work. According to official data, up to 25 000 people died of the calamity. The earthquake measuring 6, 9 on the Richter scale hit 21 towns and 342 villages. About 514 000 people were left homeless. The force of the epicenter (town of Spitak with neighboring 12 villages) was 10. 21 years have passed ever since but the expression "calamity zone" is still preserved in our lexicon

07.12.2009 Սաթենիկ Վանցյան Այսօր հանրապետության նախագահ Սերժ Սարգսյանը այցելել է Գյումրի՝ հարգանքի տուրք մատուցելու 1988 թվականի երկրաշարժի զոհերի հիշատակին։

Ոգեկոչման արարողություններին մասնակցելուց հետո նախագահը մեկնել է Ախուրյանում կառուցվող շաքարի գործարան, որը ԱԺ պատգամավոր Սամվել Ալեքսանյանն է կառուցում։

Անցած տարի դեկտեմբերի 7-ին Սերժ Սարգսյանի հետ Գյումրի էր եկել նաեւ հանրապետության երկրորդ նախագահ Ռոբերտ Քոչարյանը, այս անգամ, սակայն, նա պաշտոնական պատվիրակության կազմում չէր։ Փոխարենը, երկրաշարժի զոհերի հուշարձանի մոտ տեղադրված առաջին ծաղկեպսակը նրա անունից էր, հետեւյալ վերտառությամբ. «ՀՀ պաշտոնաթող նախագահ Ռոբերտ Քոչարյանից»։

Ավելի վաղ Գյումրի էին այցելել ընդդիմության՝ Հայ Ազգային կոնգրեսի ներկայացուցիչները։ «Շատ կուզենայի այս տարածաշրջանը տեսնել երկրաշարժի վերքերից ամբողջութամբ ազատված, սրտերն ու հոգիները՝խաղաղված»,–Ազատություն ռադիոկայանի հետ զրույցում ասաց ՀԱԿ ներկայացուցիչ Արամ Սարգսյանն ու ընդծեց,–«կարեւորը կառուցված տունը չէ,կարեւորը հոգու խաղաղությունն է, ինչը, դժբախտաբար, այստեղ չկա»։

Ի դեպ, նախապես հայտարարվել էր, որ այսօր Գյումրիի Մուշ-2 թաղամասում անօթեւան մի քանի ընտանիքների նոր բնակարաններ են հանձնվելու, սակայն,շենքերի շահագործումը հետաձգվել է այս ամսվա երկրորդ տանսօրյակ։

Աղետի գոտում երկրաշարժից 21 տարի անց դեռեւս 7000 անօթեւան ընտանիք կա, որից 4200-ը Գյումրիում: Դեռ անցած տարի երկրի ղեկավարները խոստացել էին, որ 2009-ին Գյումրիում 1320 ընտանիք բնակարան կունենա: Աղետի գոտու վերականգնման վերջնաժամկետը, ըստ խոստումների, 2013 թվականն է: Տեսանյութը` Սաթենիկ Վանցյանի:
