Կծոխուր սովորականը տերևաթափ թուփ է՝ մինչև 1,5 մ բարձրությամբ, անկյունավոր, ուղղաձիգ, դեղնավուն կամ դեղնածիրանագույն, ավելի ուշ՝ գորշամոխրավուն ճյուղերով։ 1—2 սմ երկարություն ունեցող փշերը 3 կամ 5 ճյուղանի են։ Ծաղկաբույլը հուրան է, կազմված 8—25 դեղին ծաղիկներից, որոնք խիստ տհաճ հոտ են արձակում։ Հատապտուղը ալ-կարմիր է, երկարավուն-էլիպսաձև։ Ծաղկում է ապրիլ-մայիսին, պտուղները հասունանում են սեպտեմբեր-հոկտեմբերին:

What is Berberis vulgaris used for?
In Ayurveda, it is traditionally used to cure various infections of eye, ear and mouth, to lose weight, to heal wounds quickly, to cure piles and hemorrhoids, to treat dysentery, indigestion, uterine and vaginal disorders as well as to treat snake or Scorpion bite as an antidote.

Berberis vulgaris is a deciduous Shrub growing to 3 m (9ft) by 2 m (6ft) at a medium rate. 
It is hardy to zone (UK) 3 and is not frost tender. It is in leaf from March to November, in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen from September to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. 
It is noted for attracting wildlife. 
Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil.
