NEW YORK, Jan 18 (Reuters) - NYSE Euronext (NYX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Friday said it contacted Icahn Enterprises LP (IEP.N: Quote, Profile, Research) over what it said was "unusual market activity" in the stock of the company headed by prominent investor Carl Icahn.

Icahn Enterprises stock fell $14.50, or 12.15 percent, to $104.85 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.

The exchange said it "requested that the company issue a public statement indicating whether there are any corporate developments which may explain the unusual activity."

It said Icahn Enterprises responded that "its policy is not to comment on unusual market activity or rumors."

Icahn could not be reached for immediate comment. (Reporting by Dane Hamilton; Editing by Andre Grenon)
