POPE LEO XIII APPEALED TO SULTAN IN VAIN TO STOP AN EARLIER MASSACRE OF ARMENIANS Catholic Insight http://www.catholici...icle_1169.shtml Aug 23, 2011 Armenia News reported July 11, 2011 on an appeal by Pope Leo XIII (Pope: 1878-1903) to the Turkish sultan to stop the 1894-1896 massacre of Armenian Christians. That appeal was recently disclosed by the Vatican Archives. Following the release of the "Secret Archives" dealing with Armenia, a reporter for the Turkish Vatan newspaper interviewed Archbishop Sergio Pagano, who is in charge of the Vatican Archives. Archbishop Pagano "stressed that back in 1896...Pope Leo XIII called on the Sultan to show sympathy and stop the genocide." "Pagano said that the documents and information about the Armenian genocide from Vatican's secret archives will be published in a separate book. He cited several stories from the documents. "An eyewitness from Erzurum said, 'I saw how numerous children were killed. My niece ran away from home with a two-year-old child on her shoulders, but she was shot. When she fell on the ground two soldiers came to her and killed her. I saw the killing of our city's spiritual leader. They gouged out his eyes, pulled his beard. Before killing him, the soldiers forced him to dance." Another story was told by a Turkish soldier named Mustafa Suleyman: 'We entered the Armenian villages and killed them all, without regard to gender and age. Kurds who came with us robbed Armenian houses. Many old Armenians, disabled people, were hiding in schools located in the centre of the city, but we had an order and killed them. Eight hundred Armenians were killed and burnt in Geliguzan village. They gouged out the eyes of a priest, Fr. Hovhannes; his beard, nose, and ears were cut off. I have not killed a single child, even saved two of them. I was hiding them in my tent but once I went in I saw their bodies dismembered.' "Under the orders of bloody Sultan Abdul Hamid over 300,000 Armenians were killed in 1894-1896." (The Wanderer, July 21, 2011) The massacre of these years is not to be confused with the greater Armenian Holocaust which took place during the World War I years, when an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed. Obviously, this slaughter foreshadowed the larger one in 1915. Both crimes were ignored by Europe whose nations were in deadly rivalry with one another.

Not to forget that the name of that bishop is "pagano" i.e "pagan/hethanos".

Pope Benedict XV’s letter to Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V on the Armenian Genocide

Armenian News-NEWS.am presents below excerpts from Pope Benedict XV’s letter dated September 10, 1915 to Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V on the Armenian Genocide. In the letter, which is published in the French website Imprescriptible, the Pope condemns the Armenian Genocide and urges the Sultan to put an end to suffering of the Armenians.

“At this time, when the powerful empire of Your Excellency is engaged in a great battle with the powerful nations of Europe, the pain caused by the horrors tortures our hearts, and, also, the echo of the lament of an entire people reaches us. Those people are being subjected to indescribable suffering in the vast Ottoman territory. The Armenian people have already seen how the majority of their children were sent for punishment. We now learn that the entire population of villages and towns must abandon their homes, in order to reach—with unspeakable difficulties and torture—distant places where poverty and hunger will be added to their psychological suffering. We believe these unlawful deeds are carried out against the will of your government.

We therefore petition to you with confidence, Your Excellency, and urge you to manifest goodness and conscience, and to intervene for the benefit of a people who, even with the power of their faith, are compelled to remain loyal to your country.

But Your Excellency, do not allow the innocent to be punished, and see to it that even those who have gone astray may take advantage of your sovereign generosity.

Speak your powerful and inspiring words of peace and forgiveness, and, being assured that they no longer will suffer from violence and persecution, the Armenian people would bless the august name of their guarantor.”

Arpa, I wouldn't be so critical.
Pope really did what he could back then..Don't forget about all the Catholic missionaries and all the Armenian kids they were able to save. Unfort. Pope's power wasn't on the Medieval level in 1915, it was pure politics that he couldn't really effect..
I dare to think Benedictus deserves a thank you for not being silent and raising the question...

TURKISH BISHOPS' SPOKESMAN DENIES SAYING TURKEY IS INNOCENT OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

The spokesman for the Catholic bishops' conference of Turkey has
emphatically denied that he suggested Vatican archives would show that
Turkey was innocent of genocide against the Armenian people.

Rinaldo Marmara, the bishops' spokesman, had been quoted in a Turkish
daily, Vatan, as saying that internal "Armenian problems"-rather than
deliberate Turkish policies-were responsible for the deaths of
hundreds of thousands of Armenians in 1915. Marmara charged that the
quotations attributed to him were taken out of context by "journalists
to search for provocation."

In fact, Marmara said, the Vatican archives contain a rich deposit of
documents regarding the history of Turkey. "There are of course also
some on the Armenian issue," he said, but he noted that these
resources are available to all qualified scholars, and he did not
intend to comment on the lessons to be drawn from them. "I just point
out the relevance of these archives," he said.

Secret Archives

The chilling testimonies will be published in a book. The news came
during the presentation of the "Lux Arcana" exhibition which will
display the treasures of one of the world's oldest archives

VATICAN CITY--In the Secret Vatican Archives are stored documents that
testify to the unprecedented and shocking Genocide by the Ottoman
Empire against the Armenians after the First World War, documents that
will be published soon in a book co-edited by the same Vatican
Archives.

The advanced news arrived, a little by surprise, during the
presentation in the Vatican of the exhibit "Lux Arcana", which - from
next February - will open to the public, for the first time, the
treasures of one of the oldest and most extensive archives in the
world.

The testimonials, explained the prefect of the Secret Archives,
Monsignor Sergio Pagano, describe "in detail" the "procedures of
torture that the Turks used towards the Armenians." For example, he
said, there is evidence of how the soldiers of the Sublime Porte would
bet "on the sex of fetuses in the wombs of pregnant women before they
quartered them and with the same knife killed the babies".

These episodes, said the Vatican archivist, who "make me ashamed to be
a man, and if it were not for faith, I would see only darkness".

It is easy to imagine that the publication of these documents reignite
the tension between the Holy See and Turkey, at a time when the memory
of the killing of Monsignor Luigi Padovese, Apostolic Vicar of
Anatolia, a year ago June 3rd, is still alive.

The Catholic Church is still waiting for an acknowledgment by the
Turkish state, although recently some progress has been made. For
example, it has become easier to perform pilgrimages to the church in
Tarsus, the birthplace of St. Paul.

>From the presentation of the exhibit many expected new light on the
pontificate of Pius XII, always controversial, because of his role
during World War II and with regards to the Holocaust. On this point,
Bishop Pagano announced that we must expect "interesting tidbits"
within three or four years, when the inventory of documents relating
to his pontificate will be completed and the Archive opened to
scholars.

In the exhibit, however, there will be a display of "emotional
documents" such as photographs and diaries of the war but nothing that
"can shed light on Pius XII's pontificate, since it is still closed".

In light of the controversy over his role during the Holocaust and the
delicacy of relations between the Catholic and Jewish communities, for
decades scholars have hoped to find a document that can attest
unequivocally that Pius XII had called on Catholic institutions
worldwide to protect persecuted Jews - a document of which there are
various indirect evidences.

The issue is still very delicate as shown by the echo caused by the
recent words of the Israeli ambassador to the Holy See, Mordechay
Lewy, who had at first defended Pacelli as a "protector" and was later
forced to clarify his statements after the controversies that erupted
at home.

The Vatican Secret Archive is surrounded by a halo of mystery, and not
just for its name ('secret', in this case, is the medieval Latin
meaning for 'private'). Not surprisingly, Dan Brown set some scenes of
his 'Angels and Demons' and strangely enough, a video prepared to
present the exhibit points heavily on the enigmatic atmosphere of the
Hollywood movie.

Actually, for centuries the Archives preserve records and government
documents of popes and the Holy See.

The intention of the exhibit, explained Monsignor Pagano, is precisely
to dispel this storybook myth: "In addition to a natural intent for
aesthetic vision of historic relics, famous and less so, fascinating
vestments, it intends to shed light on the reality of the venerable
institution, on its nature, its contents, its activity".

For the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, 'Lux in
Arcana' (light on hidden places, in Latin) is therefore a more than
appropriate title for the exhibit. "The 'arcane' - he explained - are
not to be construed as 'arcana imperii', or the secrets of the
government, but the hidden and vast areas of the archives, which by
their nature are jealous, protective, alert to the treasures they
watch over."

At the exhibit will be displayed, for example, the 'Dictatus papae' in
which Gregory VII (1073-1085) sanctioned the supremacy of the papal
theocracy over any other power; the next 'Deposition of Emperor
Frederick II' (1245); the letter which members of the British
Parliament sent to Clement VII on the known and controversial marriage
of King Henry VIII (1530); an autographed document of Michelangelo.

Also present were two findings in the middle between the archival and
art: a letter on silk from Helen of China to Innocent X (1650) and a
letter on birch bark of the American Indians to Leo XIII (1887). Also
on display will be documents of the breach of Porta Pia and the
unification of Italy.

Among the highlights of the exhibit, there are also the authentic and
complete dossier of the trial of Galileo Galilei, including the
indictments of the Holy Office, the documents of the prosecutor Robert
Bellarmine, and the sentence and signed abjuration of the scientist
from Pisa.

Vatican sought to stop Armenian genocide, new research shows

A new book based on research in the Vatican’s secret archives shows that the Vatican’s representative in Turkey took extraordinary measures to stop the genocidal campaign against Armenians in the early 20th century.

 

Archbishop Angelo Mario Dolci (who would later be made a cardinal), while acting as apostolic delegate in Constantinople, wrote to Turkish authorities in 1915 to argue against the genocide, writes researcher Valentina Karakhanian. When his pleas fell on deaf ears, the papal legate tried to rally other diplomats to defend the Armenians—and even went beyond his brief, approaching political figures and circulating private documents in an attempt to stop the campaign. “The Vatican did what it could, and in some cases what it could not, because the nuncio went to meet with people who were outside the diplomatic sphere.”

Archbishop Dolci wrote vivid reports on the genocide, and Pope Benedict XV was moved to involve himself in the effort to stop it, Karakhanian reports. The book also shows that Archbishop Dolci understood the Turkish campaign that began in 1915 as a bid to rid the country not only of Armenians but also of other Christians, including Assyrians, Chaldeans, Melkites, and Maronites.
