U.S. army General hails Armenian soldiers as 'selfless and skilled'

93-year-old Armenian man may be the world's oldest masters diver

247712.jpg

Even at 93 years old, Tom Hairabedian is diving head-first into competition.

The oldest masters level diver in the world, known as “Dr. Dive”, began competing at 17 years old, and though he’s slowed down a bit, he’s still performing dives most people decades younger wouldn’t even dream of attempting, FanSided says.

According to the International Swimming Hall of Fame, where Hairabedian has been a member since 2007, he developed his “can do it” mentality from his mother and father, who survived the Armenian Genocide and served as a Captain in the Russian Army, respectively.

He competed on USC’s diving team and then went on to become the head swimming and diving coach at Central Missouri State University.

At the Masters level, he has more than 140 national titles and 16 world titles.

He even takes his dives all the way up to the 10-meter platform (that’s 32 feet). Check out his backflip from that height when he was 90 years old.

Born in 1924, Hairbedian is capable of putting on a show off the diving boards, too. In July, he played the national anthem on his harmonica at the USA Masters Games in Carlsbad, Calif.

He has a doctorate degree in physical education and follows a raw foods diet, and it’s paid off. He doesn’t have any metal holding his body together, like many of his friends who are former divers, and he reports no major health issues.

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Armenian startup 1-Ring which had launched an Indiegogo campaign to support the world's first levitating camera - the Moon - has raised $81,300 in a single day.

A few hours after the start of the campaign, the project had already collected more than $24,000 from the final goal of $45,000.

The proprietary technology used in the Moon provides for a noiseless, jerk-free and fully controllable levitation that has no equal on the consumer market. The Moobn by 1-Ring can rotate smoothly and without delay in any direction and is charged wirelessly for 24/7 uninterrupted operation.

Should the Moon by 1-Ring detect movement or noise it will automatically rotate towards it, take a snapshot or respond in a predefined way. You can also take direct control of the camera to record a video, make a snapshot or communicate two-way at any time.

YEREVAN. – Armenians are unique because they know how to live and work in different cultures, Armenian-born Russian billionaire, co-founder of the humanitarian award Aurora Ruben Vardanyan said during the Second Pan-Armenian Scientific Forum in Yerevan on November 6.

Armenians live in Shiite and Sunni cultures, Western and Eastern European, as well as Soviet and post-Soviet cultures.

“We can become unique guides among different cultures.  Armenians not only easily learn different languages, but also knowing different cultures, they learn the language of mutual understanding and can act as an interpreter for people speaking the same language but not understanding each other. And, mutual understanding is extremely important in the modern world,” he said.

Miami Beach elects Armenian-American for commissioner

Mark Samuelian has won his race for the Miami Beach City Commission. With all precincts reporting, Samuelian received 7,535 votes out of a total of 11,111 votes cast, or 67.82%. He is the first Armenian American to hold public office in Miami-Dade County, Florida Armenians reports.

In a wild race that once had five people vying for the Group II seat, Mark Samuelian stayed above the fray throughout the campaign. He ran a clean, professional, and solid grassroots campaign, and he kept working until the very end, despite his opponents’ woes.

Surrounded by family, friends, and supporters at the Betsy Hotel in South Beach, Samuelian shared the big news to a long and celebratory applause. In his victory speech, he outlined his governing principles and campaign priorities. He reiterated his vow to work hard to ensure his policies are adopted and that residents are well represented on the commission.

In addition to Samuelian, two other FLArmenians.com endorsed candidates won their races. Dan Gelber was elected Miami Beach Mayor with 82.38%, and Michael Gongora was elected to the Miami Beach Commission Group III seat with 64.81%.

“Florida Armenians congratulate all the winners in Miami Beach and throughout Miami-Dade County,” stated Florida Armenians Editor Taniel Koushakjian. “We are especially proud of Mark Samuelian on his historic, and resounding victory. I expect there to be many more Armenian Americans holding public office in Florida in the years to come,” Koushakjian said.
