Battle-Area-Clearance-in-Nerkin-Horatagh
STEPANAKERT—The HALO Trust, the world’s largest humanitarian landmine clearance organization, confirmed that three of its staff members were killed and two injured following an accidental detonation of an anti-tank landmine in the Gazanchi area near Martakert on Thursday morning.

“It is with profound sadness that we report that three of our staff were killed and two injured, by the accidental detonation of an anti-tank landmine in the Ghazanchi area of Nagorno Karabakh on the morning of 29th March,” said a statement issued by HALO Trust.

The organization identified those killed as Pavel Akopov, Samson Avanessian and Marat Petrossian—all citizens of Artsakh. They were in a vehicle conducting minefield survey duties at the time.

The injured are currently being treated in the Stepanakert Hospital and HALO has contacted the families in Artsakh of all those involved.

“We are working closely with the local police and authorities and have called in external investigators to report on the full facts of the incident,” said the HALO statement.

“Every day around the world, more than 8,000 HALO staff go to work in places where no one else can tread and this tragic incident throws into stark relief the dangers that they face and the importance of our work. Our colleagues were killed while working to make the land safe for the people of Nagorno Karabakh,” said James Cowan, HALO’s chief executive officer.

The blast killed at least 135 people and injured more than 4,000 others. A two-week state of emergency has begun in the country.

President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse.

The ammonium nitrate had reportedly been in a warehouse in Beirut port for six years after it was unloaded from a ship impounded in 2013.

Iranian-Armenian nun among Beirut blast victims

A nun is among the 13 Armenian victims of the Beirut explosion, Arevelk reported, citing its sources.

The nun, identified as Sophie Khosrovian, was an Iranian Armenian who served as an abbess at one of the churches in Lebanon. She was a member of the Sisters of Mercy Congregation.

The massive blast that hit the port of Beirut on 4 August has killed at least 154 people and injured more than 5,000 others.

More than 300,000 people have been left homeless in the wake of the blast.

Local authorities say the blast was caused by the detonation of more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at a warehouse in the Beirut port for six years.

Lebanon AYF, Scouts Help Clean Up Efforts in Bourdj Hammoud
August 8,  2020

Members of Lebanon’s AYF join in the cleanup efforts

The devastation and destruction caused by Tuesday’s massive explosion in the port of Beirut has shattered many communities around the city. Residents, however, have begun the arduous task of cleaning up and bringing some semblance of normalcy to their lives.

Members of various Armenian Youth Federation of Lebanon chapters in the Armenian-populated Bourdj Hammoud neighborhood, heeded the call of local authorities and on Friday evening took part in the area’s cleanup efforts, reported the Beirut-based Aztag Daily.

The cleanup involved sweeping glass and other debris from the explosion.

The AYF members called on the entire community to join in this effort and assist the Bourdj Hammoud authorities’ efforts to restore the neighborhood as quickly as possible.

Joining the effort were scouts from Beirut’s northern suburb of Kornet Hamra who joined their AYF colleagues in the Bourdj Hammoud cleanup. They also urged residents of their area to join in and bring the neighborhood some respite from the tragedy.

As of this writing, 154 people were reported to have died from Tuesday’s explosion, which has also impacted the Armenian community, whose leaders are reporting that 13 Armenians perished as a result of the blast.

The first of three humanitarian flights took off from Yerevan and is carrying 20 tons of emergency supplies to Lebanon.

Armenian Cemeteries Destroyed in Iran

05/16/2021 Iran (International Christian Concern) –  Looters have destroyed Armenian cemeteries in Iran, seeking to find antiques and other valuables. The destruction of historical Christian sites is made worse as no government intervention seeks to preserve the sites, only giving looters more freedom to survey potential targets.

An Armenian cemetery in Abadan was registered in 2002 with the National Monuments List of Iran. Yet rumors of wealth hidden among the tombs have brought looters and destruction of property.  Up until a few years ago, the cemetery was protected by guards. However, repeated clashes and raids of the cemetery caused the police to refuse to intervene. Now, the Armenian cemetery lies in ruins. Another Armenian cemetery in Hadan recently was videoed showing the widespread destruction that looters have had on the historical Christian site.

The Iranian government, including the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, has not intervened or indicated that they seek to preserve the Christian minority sites.
