Why 99 beads?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misbaha

A misbaḥah is a tool used to perform dhikr, including the 99 Names of Allah, . It is often made of wooden beads, but also of olive seeds, ivory, amber, pearls or plastic. A misbahah [b]usually consists of 99 beads sometimes 33 beads (in which case One cycles through them 3 times to equal 99).

One of the most cherished possessions of my father was his stringed amber beads., ՍԱԹԷ ՀԱՄՐԻՉ. My brother has it now.
Similar but not quite.

We would have so much fun with it. We would rub them together and smell that certain aroma, or use it as a static magnet to pick up shreds of paper or hair.
