Uruguays top model and beauty queen with Armenian roots has been crowned Miss Universe Uruguay 2014.
According to Uruguayan media, Johana Riva Garabetian was announced the winner at the end of a pageant that was held on Sunday in Chihuahua.
Hailing from Montevideo, Garabetian, 23, stands tall at 1.74 m and is not new to beauty pageants. She also holds the crown of Miss Tourism Uruguay 2008 and has even competed at the Miss Tourism International 2008 in Malaysia. She was placed in the Top 15 there. The Guardian: Birth rate in Nagorno-Karabakh has increased by 25% within 3 years due to governmental monetary rewards

Nagorno-Karabakh, a small region in Azerbaijan that has declared itself independent but remains unrecognized by the rest of the world, was one place actively trying to increase its population – by giving out cash at births and weddings, writes the British Photojournalist Anastasia Taylor-Lind at the Guardian.

She has been a guest at the Karabakh wedding and shares her impressions. She notes in particular that the young couple, Artak and Armine, received around £470 at their wedding. They could go on to get £150 for their first baby, £310 for the second, £780 for the third, and £1,110 for the fourth. Families with six children under the age of 18 get a house.

“These are significant amounts in a country where income is very low. Within three years of the incentive being introduced, the birth rate had spiked by 25%,” Taylor-Lind.

She then describes the Karabakh wedding; she notes that the celebrations began at the bride’s house, then they continue at the groom’s house. The guests eat, drink and dance a lot. She counted about 200 guests. The newly married couple is sitting in between their "best couple" – a pair who have been married for a few years and whose job is to be their guardians, a bit like god parents.
The photographer writes that the groom’s village is on the border with Azerbaijan. She was told that the ceasefire regime is violated frequently; they kill both soldiers and civilians.

CHESS: ARONIAN CRUISING TO VICTORY AT TATA STEEL

CHESS | 24.01.14 | 15:22

Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian has increased his lead at Wijk
aan Zee after scoring another victory in Round 9 of the prestigious
annual tournament played in the Netherlands.

Playing with white pieces on Thursday the Armenian beat one of his
top rivals at the tournament, Russia's Sergey Karjakin, making himself
1.5 points clear of the next rival in the 12-man standings.

Two more rounds are due to be played in the Tata Steel Festival that
is scheduled to finish on January 26. Aronian needs a point to secure
overall success.

The top Armenian grandmaster already won at Tata Steel in 2012 and
shared the top prize in Wijk aan Zee in 2007. Last year the Armenian
grandmaster finished second at the tournament.

Aronian happy with his fourth victory in Wijk aan Zee

Levon Aronian won the Masters Group on Saturday. The Armenian grandmaster lost his only game to Dutch GM Loek van Wely, but still gained 13.7 rating points in Wijk aan Zee.
“I tend to expect to play well in tournaments,” said Aronian at the traditional press conference given by the winner. He called Wijk aan Zee his favorite tournament, and clearly was happy with his fourth victory. (Later, at the closing ceremony he would state that he plays his best chess in Wijk.)
Even though he had already won the tournament, Aronian was clearly playing for a win in the last round, but ended up losing. He called the fight with Loek van Wely the most interesting game he played in the tournament. “It wasn't my intention to get in time trouble but I did, and then I blundered a mate in one,” Aronian said.
Boris Gelfand and Arkadij Naiditsch both won again and can go home with at least a few wins, Chess.com reports.

With Serj Tankian’s donation, Vanadzor’s needy elderly to receive hot meal

On February 17, 2014, Orran Vanadzor will launch a soup kitchen program for 30 needy elderly of the city. The program is being financed by the generous donation of world renowned vocal artist Serj Tankian and his wife Ange. The elderly will come to Orran in late morning to receive a hot meal and to spend some time socializing with one another and with some of the children. The program is based on the Yerevan Orran program where since the year 2000 over 55 elderly have been benefiting from Orran’s daily meal program, the organization’s press service reported.
Currently 65 economically deprived children attend Orran Vanadzor and receive a hot meal, medical, social, psychological and tutorial services. The children also obtain vocational training and participate in a rich cultural program. Orran Vanadzor has been in existence since the year 2009. “Because of limited funds, we could not take in the elderly as we do in Yerevan Orran,” explains Armine K. Hovannisian, founder of Orran.
“When Serj Tankian and his wife Ange asked how they could help Orran Vanandzor, I gave them a few options. They instantly took an interest in the plight of the elderly and within days made a personal contribution to make sure that in this harsh winter the really needy elderly could at least have one hot meal a day and a warm place to feel cared for.”

LEBANON STAMP TO HONOR ARMENIAN GENOCIDE VICTIMS

21:38 28.01.2014

Armenian Genocide, Lebanon

Caretaker Minister of Telecommunications of Lebaon Nicolas Sehnaoui
announced Tuesday the commissioning of a stamp to honor the martyrs
of the Armenian Genocide in 1915, The Daily Star reports.

Lebanon has a large and vocal Armenian community with around 200,000
Lebanese of Armenian origin in the country, a result of forced
displacement after the partition of the Ottoman Empire at the end of
the World War I.

While Turkey still resolutely denies genocide took place, last April
saw over 10,000 Armenians rallying in Downtown Beirut on the 98th
anniversary of the genocide.

The stamp depicts a drawing of a statue honoring Armenian martyrs
found in Bikfaya.

The stamp will be in circulation in a month's time.

Calif. State Assembly unanimously approves Genocide Education bill.

Despite heavy opposition by pro-Turkey lobbying groups, the California State Assembly on January 29 voted unanimously, to pass Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian’s bill, AB 659, encouraging schools to use oral histories when teaching about the Armenian Genocide, asbarez.com said. AB 659 will now move on to State Senate for consideration.

“The unanimous passage of AB 659 sends a strong message that California officials cannot be bought or bullied into denying truth and justice. The ANCA WR commends Assemblymembers Nazarian and Achadjian for spearheading through this important genocide education legislation and looks forward to working with them in garnering similar support in the State Senate,” stated Elen Asatryan, Executive Director of the ANCA-WR.

“AB 659 has enjoyed overwhelming support from my colleagues in the Assembly,” commented Assemblymember Nazarian, following the vote. “I look forward to continuing to work with the ANCA-WR to garner support from our counterparts in the Senate. The personal testimonies of Genocide survivors will give educators a powerful tool to engage students in the subject matter in ways they have never been taught before. If we expect to stop the genocides of the future, it is important that we strengthen the teaching mechanisms on past genocides,” he continued.

Joining Nazarian as co-authors AB 659 were State Senator Mark Wyland ® and Assemblymembers Katcho Achadjian ®, Steve Fox (D), Mike Gatto (D), Scott Wilk ®, and Cheryl Brown (D). Other members of the State Assembly who spoke in support of the measure during the floor session were Assemblymembers Tim Donnelly ® and Diane Harkey ®.

That's a quirk.  How in the world did this happen?  Don't get me wrong.  It's truly a good thing that high tech industry is growing there, making its comeback, but US military hardware?
