They can either have an older model ipod or one of the copies out there...
Any suggestions?
I remember seeing a report with all different versions of those ipod things...I don't even know what to call them but ipod...but I wasn't really paying attention so now I dont' remember which brand they said was the best....
Help before I go and buy some shoes with their money

They can get the Nomad Zen for $200
I would personally get the Rio Karma but that's about $250 so out of the price range.
The other option at $250 would be the Archos Gmini XS200 which I like a lot ... I've had their stuff for years and they have excellent products.

Cheaper alternatives DO exist, but only if it's about listening to portable music, if it's a teen/pre-teen status symbol thing, than only the iPod will do.
There are different kinds of iPods though, the larger, high-capacity ones (some even show photos in colour, which are the most expensive) and the smaller 'cooler' versions that come in multiple bright-coloured shell casings called IPod Minis. Here the minis sell for around 300$ so they should be cheaper in down there, maybe along the lines of 250$ .
Then at the bottom end of the iPod scale, there's the new iPod Shuffle:
Smaller than a pack of gum, you can get this with 512mb, or 1Gb of memory which is PLENTY for MP3s, unless you wish to carry your enrtire music collection with you. Retail price starts at 100$ - more affordable for the kids, but the downside is. there's no screen...

They have a different product every day and last week they had the 40GB ipod for $309. With that said, I think it is ridiculous to get the 40 gig version as who the hell has that many songs.(maybe I am wrong)
I also like the nomad, but I think kids will be disappointed if you get anything else but the iPod. Also watch out for the after costs. They also sign up for iTunes after and each song is 99 cents but it adds up fast.
The iPod mini is 249. And I think you can get it from ebay for sub 200.

With the price of SD memories falling, and the MP3 players like the little RIO costing like nothing, I don't see the justification to pay for a 20 Gb ipod. Can you say that you even fill over 4 Gb of that thing?

Edit: This is not to say that I never download mp3s
Edit #2: By the way, for a cheap and legal way to get mp3s, check out www.allofmp3.com ... they are VERY cheap since they are based in Russia. Legality wise, there is some sort of loophole and I've tried to read and understand it but it doesn't make much sense to me. However, I highly doubt anyone would be able to make a strong legal case against you for getting your mp3s there
Edit #3: I am not a lawyer and can't give legal advice
Edit #4: I haven't actually used that site myself.

Don't tell me that you have actually bought about 4000 thousand or so songs.
