I've planted Sumak, you know for the lemony flakes. The plants have berries, not ripe, if you roll a berry around on your tongue you'll get the taste, but the flesh of the green seed doesn't, yet, have the taste.

Question: Is it the pith of the dried ripened seeds that is used?

Do you know?

I guess it must be.

As far as I know, the whole purplish flower is used. After it's picked you dry it and then grind it with hands or other method, remove the big chunks the leftover is your sumak. I hope I was helpful. :)

Greetings Yervant, This is oak Leave Sumak, the flowers were light in color: white or yellow. I didn't think to taste the flowering heads, being busy. The exterior of the bean or seed has that flavor, I'm hoping that can be used, if it's the flower, and you may be right, it's next year. Thankyou,

Hyrigus told me they grew it around the water ponds. Didn't realize there were so many kinds of Sumak or Sumac.300px-Sumac.jpgSumac05.jpgSumac05.jpgSumac05.jpg

Well, here's the answer: The Sumac I have growing is: Rhus trilobata cold hardy down to zone 3, The Sumac we/they use is Rhus coriaria cold hardy to zone 8, or 9. Both our growing areas are approx. zone 6. Disappointing! Maybe I can grow it. I can get the seed, maybe even a cutting.

You can google it, if interested.

Yervant mentioned use of the flowering heads, that must be right. The red berries of this Sumac has the exact flavor, when we were at the nursery run by the state of Nevada, I tasted the sumac, I thought, great and bought a few plants, well, we'll see.

StaghornSumac.jpg

This kind of sumac is grown abundantly near roads and highways in Ontario and some homes has it as shrubs. Just cut the flower and dry it in order to get the sumac simple as that.

Yervant, Is that Ontario, California or Canada? The Sumac, Rhus Coriaria, you show in the above picture is the one I want, but may not be able to grow in this growing zone.

I plan to get the seeds or a cutting, If it can overwinter here that would be great. I can try by potting it and bringing it inside, also burying it in mulch. I am able to over winter thompsom grape, for the leaves, without burying.

Thankyou Yervant, The picture you posted matches Rhus Coriaria if googled.

Ontario, Canada :) If this plant can survive Canada's winter, it should survive yours as well.

Yervant, Yes, that's what I was thinking. Did you take that picture? There is one Sumac called: Staghorn Sumac, looks very mush the same.

MosJan, Here is what comes off the seeds, I haven't pushed it through a screen yet, The taste is right, but I still prefer the type Yervant has posted a picture of.

That, in the picture is Staghorn Sumac, Rhus tyhina and is cold hardy Zones 4-6. That I'm sure will grow here. Slightly different cultivar but sister plants.  I'm going to get it growing here, should grow at the mountain place also.

Thanks Yervant,

Well, wife found a bare root Sumac. It sprouted in a couple days after planting. I'll transplant into the ground when it's larger, it is in the greenhouse until then.

It grows fast here it is only about 4 days after sprouting. It is the one you, Yervant, have pictured in your post, one of Arpa's links, God care for him, also showed it.
