Tbilisi, July 6 (Xinhau)-- The Forbes magazine has ranked the South Caucasus country of Armenia as the second worst economy in the world this year, after having analyzed the macro-economic indicators of 177 countries and regions over the past three years.
Other data used by Forbes for its analysis included the per capital gross domestic product growths as relesed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the IMF-forecast inflation rates in the coming 2012 and the current account balaces.
The 2011 Forbes-ranked world's worst five economies are Madagascar, Armenia, Guinea, Ukraine and Jamaica.
Armenian's economy in 2010 witnessed a 2.6 percent year-onyear GDP growth.
In 2010, the Forbes magazine ranked Zibabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Guinea as the world's three worst economies.
The Armenian national statistical service reported that the country's per capital GDP at the end of last year was 2,885 U.S. dollars and 3,509.6 dollars in current prices over the reporting period.

Authorities explain why Forbes ranked Armenia among worst economies
July 07, 2011 | 18:39
YEREVAN. - American Forbes magazine placed Armenia among the weakest economies of the world, a fact that caused much confusion in the midst of Armenian ruling elite.
During his meeting with journalist in Gyumri the Speaker of Armenian Parliament Hovik Abrahamyan stated that Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan must respond to this information. However the expected response came from the Minister of Finance Vache Gabrielyan. He explained that Forbes estimation is based on indicators for economic growth, inflation and current account deficit for the past three years. Since 2009 saw significant deterioration of these figures, the rating of the country decreased correspondingly.
“I do not mean to say that Forbes rating has nothing to do with the reality, however this is quite snap estimation, which could never linger for the coming year since we register a price fall and economy growth tendency,” said the Minister.
Note that three post Soviet countries appeared in Forbes World’s Worst Economies list- Armenia (2), Ukraine (4) and Kazakhstan (7).
Below are the complete Top 10 Worst Economies as released by Forbes Magazine:
1. Madagascar
2. Armenia
3. Guinea
4. Ukraine
5. Jamaica
6. Venezuela
7. Kyrgyztan
8. Swaziland
9. Nicaragua
10. Iran

I am very surprised that Madagascar is the last on the list, because Madagascar was a French colony, at school we learnt everything
about it, and many French people used to go there, it was not a poor country like Armenia now. The people went to French schools and
they used to speak French. Now they are independant.
